Xmas is coming. Think out of the gift-box.

We’d like to encourage you to open your heart, clean your closet & storage out and donate your unwanted items to our orphan and vulnerable children. We have been organizing book club and soup kitchen for more than 100 children since January on a weekly basis and we desperately need the following items to keep up our work:

Juventus Ventus – Youth Day 16 June 2011

Juventus Ventus as the ancient Latin says. It means while you are young you like the wind. You pop in here and the next moment you are somewhere else already.  It is totally ok to have fun, but in our days we have to get matured much faster. Our whole world is running in the fast lane so we need to learn about our responsibilities much earlier than before. Here in South Africa we are facing serious issues like teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, drug abuse, hiv/aids, tb just to mention a few.

When we were busy to set up our programme we dedicated ourself to provide lot’s of fun but to give just as much space for the useful information about life, sicknesses, danger, responsibilities as well as opportunities. We believe we will offer a balanced day for our Youth Groups.

Come and join our event on 16th June in Eastridge!

Here is our detailed programmme:

9:00 Marching from Don Carlos Street to Eden’s Assembly Church, Eastridge
While we are marching we will have dancers, the Assembly of God Youth Group from Lenteguer to dance along with us.

10:00-11:00 After we arrived to the corner of Botha Street (Opposite Tafelsig Sports Field) the Youth Groups from the following areas Mandalay, Eastridge, Tafelsig, Khayelitsha, Delft, Freedom Park and Atlantis will distribute HIV, TB and drug abuse info sheets all around the area door to door.

11:00 Eden Assembly Church
We will have different people to talk about:
Drug and Substance abuse
Teenage Pregnancy
HIV/AIDS
TB – Story presented by the Drama Group from Philippi
After the talks the Assembly of God Youth Group from Lenteguer will entertain us with their talent.

12:45 Singing Competition

13:00 Lunch

14:00 Sports activities on Tafelsig Sports Field

We will have free HIV testing at Eden’s Assembly Church, Eastridge during the day from 9:00 – 14:00

You can find lot’s of information about different carrier options on our information desk.

Come, join us next week, have fun with us and learn how to have a more balanced life!

Black & White – News from the Field – Eastridge – April 2011

We decided to share our experiences with everybody. We hope you will be able to see what we see, feel what we feel.

EASTRIDGE – 13/04/2011

We had a testing day and we distributed 125 TB Packs from door to door. TB rate is very high in Eastridge Area.
We tested 64 people who came for testing and 3 cases were very sad when people had to hear the bad news. The majority of the people were unemployed adults. Most were dirty, hungry, sick and hoping to get something to eat. There is a big need for TB testing in the whole of Mitchell’s Plain area.

117 people were fed with soup and bread, majority were children.
We noticed that these children were not at school because of the following reasons:
- No transport money
- Hunger
- No clothes for school
- Parents drinking.

KTD has set up a data base of half of these children. It was very sad to see people begging for food but we had to turn them back because we have left nothing. We are planning to visit this area every second week and offer something to eat.
We will approach Social Development Department for help, also to make them aware about the situation in our communities, which will also help us in 2012. The past 2 weeks we had few children from Eastridge to attend our Book Club we have on a weekly basis in Mandalay. It was sad to see their condition as they were wearing the same clothes for days. Young girls and women have to survive on drug dealing, women trafficking and shoplifting.

CHALLENGES FACING THE AREA

  • Unemployment
  • Teenage Pregnancy
  • Gangsterism
  • Illiteracy
  • Lack of Career Guidance
  • Social issues and access to grants
  • High rates of HIV/AIDS & TB

SOLUTIONS NEED TO BE PROVIDED

  • Implement Job Creation Projects for youth
  • Skills Development Programmes for youth
  • Support Education & Training Programmes
  • Leadership Skill Trainings
  • Recruitment Strategy for disabled youth.

We hope Social Development will get involved in these communities especially with Education and Training Institute (EITI). The purpose of the testing was to make people aware of their status. A lot still need to be done to help the people. Douglas Wilderman of EDEN Assembly Community Project helped us by providing his Church at a very low cost and his car on a daily basis. He built a partnership with him and we work together fruitfully.

We would like to thank the YMCA Medical Side for their professional testing, Rocklands Clinic to support us with all the necessary equipments and we’d like to say a big thank you to all of our Volunteers  for their contribution towards our success.

Report done by Roslyn Swartz.

Testing on a rainny day

We had a testing day today again. Now it is winter here. Real winter even if it’s not snowing. And it didn’t help us with the testing. We started at 9am but because it was so cold and we got lot’s of rain the sisters left sadly at 10am.  we could test only 14 people. We prepared lot’s of food (Big Thank you for Orange Engen Garage’s bakery)  so we could feed 83 adults and 48 children. 7 volunteers worked so hard to do our best for the community. We were able to deliver 300 pamphlets about HIV and TB door to door. It is not as much as we planned/hoped for today, but we did our best to fight against nature and culture. You need to know that here in South Africa it is part of the culture that when it’s raining people want to stay inside under the blankets. If you see our result from this point of view we did great!! :)
Everybody’s support is much appreciated!

World TB Day 24 March

Robert Koch, a German physician and scientist, presented his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB), on the evening of March 24, 1882. One hundred years later the WHO decided to make 24th March the World TB day and raise awareness of this fatal sickness. Today it is a big issue again.
Click here and see more details about the situation here in South Africa.

We are going to be in the middle of the townships together with other MSAT partner organizations to give information about Tuberculosis to the crowd. We believe that if we help the people to know more details about this illness we can get them on our side and convince them to get tested way before it’d be too late.

If you click here you can see the pamphlet we prepared:

Children are innocent. Don’t let them starve to death!

Last Sunday an 8 years old child fainted in one of the Sunday Schools in Mitchell’s Plain.

The teachers took him to the hospital immediately. The doctors find out, the reason he fainted simply the fact that he had a totally empty tummy, he probably hasn’t eaten anything for days.

When we heard this story we realized something has to happen and it has to happen immediately.

Our first step in this matter is to organize an awareness day, where we want to give 1000 loaf of bread to the children.

KTD Hunger Awareness Day | 2011 March 20 | 13:00 | Eastridge | Church

If you are willing to help please do not hesitate!

How can you help?

option1:

Share this with your friends, they may want to help as well.

Come and join us on Sunday, bring a loaf of bread and bring a friend along who can bring a loaf of bread as well.

option2:

Transfer R10 to our bank account (Keep The Dream | ABSA | 4072288462 ) so we can buy the bread out of your donation.

Please send the proof of payment to donation@ktd.co.za and we will send you back the letter to confirm your payment and you can deduct the amount of your donation from your TAX.

We will send you a report of the event as well to assure you that your donation has been spent on this purpose.

We understand that one loaf of bread won’t last long but if we can help the children to go to sleep with a smile instead of an empty tummy on Sunday night we have done something.

We are currently updating our database of needy, vulnerable children. (ID, family background etc.)

If you are interested in to become one of our virtual foster-moms/dads please let us know and we will explain all the details of our project.

Thank you so much for your kind support in advance!
